    Can this be replaced without removing the valve cover? I just did the 24k valve clearance inspection on my 2016 800xc and they were all in spec, but I'm getting occasional cam chain rattle on startup, usually when it's hot and has sat a few minutes. Currently at 28,500 miles. The rattle lasts 5-7 seconds when it does happen.

    • @MuddySump
      @MuddySump 13 днів тому

      You can take it out but you’ll need to take the crank cover off so you can keep tension on the chain until you put the new one in and turn the engine over to release the clip.

    The manual calls for turning the crank backwards 1/4 turn before doing 4 CW Turns. Doing that has always resulted in a jumped tooth for me, requiring repetition of all steps (remove tensioner, ladder, camshafts, reset...). The manual is utter garbage at times.

    Fantastic video(s)! I must be missing something obvious here, as my local Triumph dealer wants £900 for the 12k valve check on a 2014 Tiger 800. So if the valves are all good and nothing needs changing this seems like a very straight forward job for £900. I do understand that if the cams have to come out and shims sorted etc then this is naturally a much much bigger job. surely there should be two different costs perhaps from Triumph?

    • @MuddySump
      @MuddySump 2 місяці тому

      I think they’ll charge you more if they have to adjust the valves and that will be the price to just check them. Where about are you that they charge £900? Staffordshire triumph seems the worst with £1205 for a 12k on a first gen 800.

    I ride almost always in deep silty sand. At 12000 miles I decided to change my chain and sprockets. The old chain seemed fine, however. Front sprocket was chewed up, rear seemed fine. I put a hybrid sprocket on rear, with aluminum insert, new front and new chain. 5000 miles later, the hybrid sprocket, which actually weighed nearly same as stock, thick steel one, had cracked. I put the original back on. Bike is a beast.

    I've been following your videos to do my valves. Super helpful! Thank you. We have the exact same bike. (Badass black😁) I'd love to know where you got that little 1/4" extension. It looks great, with a swivel ball at one end to avoid using a separate angle adapter which can mess with your torque specs, and I like the gnarled surface so you can use by hand too. Hi Love your videos, I have a 2016 tiger 800 xcx, coming up to 55k miles. I assume valve clearance is a must but what else would you advise, plus how much would you charge if you did it?

      60k service is the next major service. Air filter and spark plugs get changed then too. Oil and filter, grease bearings…. £450 for that service

      😂 very true. Just had to play it to see what the music was. It was 8 years ago when I thought you had to find some free music to put on videos

    Hi Muddysump! Im thinking of changing my own tires in the future. The mecanic at the workshop I normally go to advised me against this though as this would be a really hard job, especially with the tiger 800 xc rims. I was wondering if you agree? I wanted to invest is eastbound levers with bead breaker to get the tires of cause I could also use this on the road. Would really like to hear your thoughts on it!

      I’ve only ever changed my dirt bike tyres with hand tools. You can do it, will get easier the more you get used to changing them. Will need to balance them afterwards as well though. You’ll definitely feel an out of balance wheel when you start getting some speed up on the road
